The 2017 vintage will go down in history as one of the hottest and driest. This could already be predicted from a particularly mild winter with temperatures more than three degrees above the seasonal average and with normal rainfall. As a result, budding occurred almost two weeks early. The vegetative cycle of the vineyards was accompanied by hot weather with little rainfall since March, just interrupted by a sudden drop in temperatures at the end of April, which brought frost to numerous areas of Tuscany. On the coast, thanks to the proximity of the sea, temperatures remained above zero, without causing any damage to the growing shoots. Already in May the heat and drought returned, limiting vegetative development and the size of the bunches, despite flowering taking place in excellent conditions. July and August were very hot and saw almost no rain, fortunately cooled by night temperatures. The harvest began early with the first Merlots on August 24th, continuing until the last week of September in sunny, warm weather. Towards the middle of the month some rain finally arrived to cool the temperature, creating excellent conditions for the late vines.
